Three North Carolinas, three kinds of roof weather
North Carolina’s roofers work in three climates. The Triangle is hail and thunderstorm country: NOAA’s Storm Events Database logged 125 hail reports and 322 damaging thunderstorm-wind reports in Wake County from 2016 through 2025 — more of both than any other county in the table below.
The coast trades hail for tropical systems: New Hanover County logged 12 hail reports, none larger than 1 inch, but 16 tornadoes and tropical-storm or hurricane entries for Hermine, Matthew, Florence, Elsa, Colin and Ian. In the mountains, Buncombe County’s storm list is short — Zeta and Helene — and one name on it changed everything.

Helene in the mountains, Florence on the coast
Helene in September 2024 dropped 20 to 30 inches of rain over a large area of western North Carolina and pushed the French Broad River at Asheville to 24.8 feet, above its 1916 record, according to the National Hurricane Center. NCEI’s Buncombe County entry counts tens of thousands of trees blown down, hundreds of them onto homes, vehicles and power lines.
Florence came ashore near Wrightsville Beach in September 2018 and set North Carolina’s tropical-cyclone rainfall record, 35.93 inches near Elizabethtown (NHC). NCEI’s New Hanover County entry logs 105 mph winds measured at Wilmington International Airport. By the time Florence reached the Triangle it was a tree-and-power-line storm: 40 to 60 mph gusts and numerous trees down across Wake County, including on homes.

One state license, from Murphy to Manteo
Roofers are licensed the same way everywhere in North Carolina. The NC Licensing Board for General Contractors requires a license when a project costs $40,000 or more — a threshold set by G.S. 87-1 and raised from $30,000 in October 2023 — and roofing is licensed under the Board’s S(Roofing) specialty classification as well as its Residential and Building classifications.
Every license carries a project limit: up to $750,000 for a Limited license, $1.5 million for Intermediate, no cap for Unlimited (G.S. 87-10). The Board’s public search works statewide, so a Wilmington roofer working a Raleigh job looks up exactly the same way.
What changes with the city is everything local: permit counters, historic-district reviews and HOA covenants. The permit statute is statewide (G.S. 160D-1110); the people applying it are not.
Raleigh’s houses next to the rest of the state
Raleigh’s housing is younger than Charlotte’s, Greensboro’s, Wilmington’s or Asheville’s. The Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 American Community Survey puts the city’s median year built at 1997, against 1995 in Charlotte, 1985 in Greensboro, 1989 in Wilmington and 1982 in Asheville — where 18.5% of homes predate 1940, against Raleigh’s 2.5%.

What is the difference between a Limited, Intermediate and Unlimited license?
