The NC Licensing Board for General Contractors requires a license when a project costs $40,000 or more — a threshold set by G.S. 87-1 and raised from $30,000 in October 2023 — and roofing is licensed under the Board’s S(Roofing) specialty classification as well as its Residential and Building classifications.
Every license carries a project limit: up to $750,000 for a Limited license, $1.5 million for Intermediate, no cap for Unlimited (G.S. 87-10). The Board’s public search works statewide, so a Wilmington roofer working a Raleigh job looks up exactly the same way.
